Preparedness Information

Prepare your home to help protect it and the drainage system from the strong winds that come with hurricanes and potential flooding.

  • Do not put your garbage out on the curb for collection until AFTER a storm to keep debris from blowing down the street, into the storm sewer system and the detention ponds.
  • Clear any debris from storm drains prior to the storm.
  • Secure or remove anything in your yard that can become a projectile and smash through windows. Items include:
    • garbage cans
    • lawn furniture
    • grills
    • decorations, planters, hanging baskets, bird feeders and wind chimes.
  • Secure heavy objects that cannot be brought inside, such as grills or propane tanks.
  • Trim tree branches away from house. Prune dead branches that are weak enough to break off when the wind picks up. Be sure to bundle them up to keep them from blowing into the storm sewer drains.
  • Reinforce windows and doors with plywood, if possible.
  • Bring all animals and pets indoors. Do not leave dogs tied up in the yard.
